Cambridge English Scale: Understanding CEQ A2 Key (KET) and B1 Preliminary (PET) Scores Ranges

The Cambridge English Scale is a standardised scoring system used to report results across various Cambridge English qualifications. It provides a detailed understanding of a candidate's proficiency by assigning a specific score to each skill assessed, such as reading, writing, listening, and speaking. This scale aligns with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), facilitating clear comparisons of language abilities.

Understanding the Cambridge English Scale:

The scale ranges from 80 to 230, covering multiple proficiency levels:

  • Proficient User:

    • C2: 200–230

    • C1: 180–199

  • Independent User:

    • B2: 160–179

    • B1: 140–159

  • Basic User:

    • A2: 120–139

    • A1: 100–119

Each Cambridge English exam targets a specific CEFR level but also assesses abilities above and below that level. For instance, the B1 Preliminary exam is aimed at Level B1 but can also provide reliable assessment at Levels A2 and B2.

A2 Key Score Ranges:

The A2 Key exam evaluates basic English skills and reports results as follows:

  • Grade A (140–150): Indicates performance at Level B1.

  • Grade B (133–139): Reflects strong performance at Level A2.

  • Grade C (120–132): Represents satisfactory performance at Level A2.

  • Scores between 100 and 119: Correspond to Level A1; candidates receive a certificate stating they have demonstrated ability at Level A1.

B1 Preliminary Score Ranges:

The B1 Preliminary exam assesses intermediate English proficiency with the following score interpretations:

  • Grade A (160–170): Demonstrates performance at Level B2.

  • Grade B (153–159): Reflects strong performance at Level B1.

  • Grade C (140–152): Indicates satisfactory performance at Level B1.

  • Scores between 120 and 139: Correspond to Level A2; candidates receive a certificate stating they have demonstrated ability at Level A2.

These score ranges provide a clear framework for understanding and interpreting Cambridge English exam results, aiding learners, educators, and institutions in assessing English language proficiency.
